Porsche Rocker Shaft Restoration

Porsche Rocker Shaft Restoration

Here's a quick little video of how we restore Porsche 911 rocker shafts here at BreitWerks in Florida when we rebuild a Porsche engine.  You will notice we use a few different grades of synthetic steel wool.  The green is used sparingly as it is the coarsest of the grits.  A light coat of polishing compund is used more for lubrication and as a visual aid than anything else.  You do not want the rockers to have a perfectly polished finish.  The objective is to leave them with a smooth surface with a honed look to it that will attract and hold oil for lubrication of the rocker arm bushing.  By using the red and grey pads we can achieve a surface quality that pretty closely resembles a brand new, OE rocker shaft.  At close to $50 each (we use 12 of them in our Porsche motors), it is worth taking the time to try to clean them up.  Occassionally you will find a shaft that is beyond repair.  However, most times they clean up well and are ready for many more miles of spirted fun!
